History

In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb founded ORTLIEB Sportartikel GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany. In 1997, the company relocated to the Franconian town of Heilsbronn in the Ansbach district. The first ORTLIEB bicycle bags were born out of Hartmut's personal need for waterproof equipment, which was not yet available at the time. The first models were handcrafted by Hartmut on his mother's sewing machine - waterproof bags and bicycle bags made from truck tarpaulin. Hartmut and his friends tested these first prototypes on their self-organized cycling and climbing tours. What started as a simple idea quickly developed into a success story.
